Lots going on in this photo: First, in the bottom of this five-foot hole you can see a bit of the old blue polybutyl water line that will be replaced. The lighter clay is the 30 year old trench from before the house was built, and the darker clay on the right is original, undisturbed paleo-prairie! The shovel at upper left marks and protects a sprinkler head and the water shut-off valve.
