One afternoon in December a neighbor knocked on my door to tell me that our street was flooding. This unexpected adventure resulted in some pictures I think are interesting if not pretty. It turned out that most of the water lines in our roughly 33 year old neighborhood were experiencing electrolytic corrosion and starting to fail!
So here's what it looked like when a water main broke on a cloudy cold December afternoon (in southeast Fort Collins) and got fixed fast (although it took 6 months for final asphalt repair). The break happened at about 3:20 p.m. After seeing it I made multiple calls to the city, it took them a long time to show up, then gather equipment, then do locates, but they found and patched the leak and had the water back on within 6 hours from when it started -- it was off for a little over 4 hours. Pretty amazing, got to love the city of Fort Collins.
