After a couple of months ago joining the group around Bear Lake and then mostly downhill to Sprague Lake, and not owning or wanting to use snowshoes like they all do (it causes me knee pain), this time I tried tagging along with my (not really backcountry) cross-country skis. Thanks to Ed for taking this picture. That only lasted about 1/2 mile before I ditched the skis and followed along on Yaktrax instead! The route to the Loch was narrow, icy, and steep.

Mostly the trails were packed enough that this worked fine, but I did get even more exercise whenever I swam around ankle to knee deep in soft snow!
