To retrieve the boulder, I towed an old (already patched) inflatable raft across the lake. The raft was rated at 120 lbs, but having floated in it a lot myself, I knew it could handle at least 200 lbs.
I started carefully sliding and rolling the boulder down the hill -- still with no idea how heavy it was -- using a tarp and a quilt for some cushioning. I moved some rocks out of the way to make it easier. Fortunately the lake had only dropped about 4' since my last visit, there were no major obstacles, and there were still cobbles all the way down to the water... The pure mud started several feet lower.
Also it was overcast and not too hot (whew).
