Ah yes, Grays Peak and Torreys Peak, a nice pair. Not very difficult, a simple and interesting climb with great scenery from the tops; one of the prettier panoramas I remember.

Checking my journal, I see that a group of us from HP climbed them July 15, 1978. It was about a 2:15 drive from Fort Collins to Bakerville on I-70, and four miles of nasty gravel road up from there. The trailhead was where the road crossed to the right bank of the creek unless you had 4WD or conditions had changed.

(I tried to go further in my Datsun and needed help getting unstuck. After that there was a terrible rattling noise. I still have the mechanic's work order that says, "Rocks removed from converter pan -- no charge" -- grin.)

It only took us 2:45 to ascend 3000' in four miles to Grays Peak. I remember the route being fairly simple and obvious. On the connecting ridge east to Mount Edwards we saw a remarkable sight -- a mother mountain goat nursing her kid.

From the top, it was 45 minutes and included 550' of climbing to reach Torreys Peak which had a small, pointy summit (the best kind). My journal said, "Glorious views... Evans/Bierstadt/Democrat/Lincoln/Bross/Longs/Pikes/Holy Cross/Quandary etc, every direction."

We came back down to the Grays/Torreys saddle before heading off the mountain. I found a nice 1000' glissade at one point and got 20 minutes ahead of others in the group, who didn't want to have fun. :-)

Happy trails...
Alan
