"The palmate leaves suggests it's a Potentilla, or cinquefoil... Many species, most are not shrubs -- they're herbaceous." I think I've learned that "cinque" to refers to the 5-petaled flower, hence many species in a large family.

Here again, I need to take a better photo sometime if I can.
