I climbed Mount Sherman, 14043', Colorado on September 6... (yawn) For the 4th time... (eh) My first 14er in my 8th decade, and the first one in 7 years! (With friend Dan half my age visiting from Tennessee.)
It was hard and I was slow and heavy... A different experience than my first time 48 years ago, and 38 years ago when I spent a night on top. But it was a gorgeous day for me and hundreds(!) of other people up there.
Unfortunately nearly two months into medication treatment for a presumed duodenal ulcer possibly caused by intense exercise at the mountain cabin (10,100') resulting in hypoxic gastric ischemia, this "gentle" hike seemed to have caused serious relapses 4 and 7 days later. I had to resume the ulcer med regimen again, get an abdominal ultrasound that revealed a rare but asymptomatic, and dangerous, Amyand's hernia (repaired surgically October 13), and also an EGD (that showed no ulcer).
My first 14er was Longs Peak in September 1977. If this is the last time I hike one, what a strange pair of bookends for my lengthy adventure. I finished the first round in 1986, have been up 2/3 of them twice and some of them 6 times, slept on 11, and even visited about half of the ~62 14er subpeaks I could identify.
