I headed down toward the crash site, "merely" 0.1 mi and 400' below. It was very steep, messy (silt and carbon), and difficult footing, sometimes giving way, other times slippery and muddy.
Along the way I saw these dead and partly burned aspen leaves that didn't drop last fall because apparently they must be alive to detach their petioles. There were a lot of seemingly unburned trees and bushes that nonetheless were not leafing out.
