I learned that tender young spruce buds are actually edible! And can be combined with sugar and water to make a syrup with an interesting flavor. I plucked unwanted buds along the cabin west driveway, bottled them like this, and left it in the fridge for 6 months. This worked, although the syrup must be used sparingly because it's pure sugar.
