Regarding many sets of cabin photos; I wrote this at the end of October:
Happy electric summer! Well now it's Halloween, I've been up to the Michigan Hill mountain cabin 10 times so far this year (always for 2 nights at a time), with Cathie along 8 of those times. (One of those trips was 4 nights in the camper van where we spent the middle 2 nights up the Hill.)
"For some reason" (hah) we visited the (off-grid, "dry") cabin a lot early in the pandemic: 14 and 13 times in 2020-21, but then only 6-6-7 the next 3 years... So we nearly sold it in 2024, but then pulled it off the (dead) market. And this year, starting last winter, we electrified it!
"When is the best time to plant a tree? Ten years ago." If we'd known the future, we should have run power to the cabin like 25 years ago -- although back then when I met Cathie and we started cleaning out and finishing the place, there were no poles yet along the main (gravel) road, and it would have been prohibitively expensive. We got used to not only bringing our water up, occasionally dumping portolets, etc, but getting by with candles and later, solar/battery-powered LED lights. Powerlines were run up the road some years later, but by then we saw no value in paying a lot to take advantage of them.
Well now about 11 months, $27K, and a huge effort later, we have: A transformer on the utility company pole, a 65' run (they maintain) to a "house pole", a conduit down that to a meter and master breaker panel (with 2 weatherproof outlets), a 183' underground run of 200 amp service, a "subpanel" with 2nd master breaker and increasing numbers of circuits on the east wall of the building, 2 more GFI outlets near it, 2 duplex outlets downstream of them inside the wall feeding some fancy power strips near the beds, and most recently, a 750W (240V) baseboard heater with indicator light (I had to add later myself), plus 4 circuits turned on feeding 6 switches or dimmers to 17 bulbs (~1KW incandescent max) plus a bathroom fan!
