During some nicer weather, I worked hard for 5 days in a row to "scratch an itch" years in the making. The maple tree did so well that it created a mostly dirt dead zone to the northeast, where not even shade-tolerant grass would grow (I tried twice). I dug trenches (chopping some roots), moved bricks, laid plastic, bought and laid 10 pavers (for about $22) with RR spike holders, prepared a rabbit-proof spot to try growing hosta, ordered 1.5" river rock (1.5 tons ended up being 1.77 delivered) from Crystal Landscaping, and moved it all in one day; 21 wheelbarrow loads averaging 169 lb each (18 shovel fulls per load).
