This is the famous long-locked gate on the Mount Sherman road at about 12040'. That's Mount Sheridan "just" 1700' above, beyond the tailings and ruins from the Dauntless mine. Silver mines in this area were most active 1860-93.
The "road" (CR 18) up to this point was 11.9 mi of horrible but passible conditions. Where there weren't tire-ripper rocks to avoid, there were bouncy boulders sticking up, and if neither of those, washboards. Even the first paved couple of miles west of US 285 contained horrendous potholes.
