After turning off-trail about 0.3 mi west of the trailhead, I "enjoyed" a long, tough, bushwhack and scramble up over 1000' to the upper trail, the way sane people normally hike from the other trailhead to Sandbeach Lake. My map notes said this route was relatively easy, but for "some reason" it took me about an hour longer than it did over 32 years ago. This is just a little seep wetting a rock where I stopped to catch my breath.

I estimate that my shortcut saved me 1.9 mi, 200' of gain, and about -30 minutes of hiking... That's right, it would have been faster the other way. But then I couldn't have just returned to the Wild Basin trailhead...
