Oct 26, two hikes on The Slope at Lake Powell (mile 78): After a windy, cloudy, rainy night, it dawned cold but surprisingly clear. In the morning all three of us wandered up the hill for a bit.

I continued alone to try climbing the very steep west side gully on a 4172' "bump" (up nearly 600' from the lake at 3592') that I nicknamed "Gertrude". Years ago I made it for the first time this way (later found an easier route on the east side), but at my more mature age, now it just seemed too steep and nasty, so instead I continued clockwise high around the bump.

Later that same day, our Captain (David) went high up the hill for hours alone, and around 3 pm the other two of us followed to look for him. He was fine, but as a result I hiked up over 1000' again, and back by dark.
