Ancient PVC parts underground in the sprinkler system cracked and started to leak slowly -- a couple of years ago. I was able to block the older leak, but this summer it got worse until I had no choice but to cut back the healthy adjacent rosebush, then dig out and replace the manifold, which was very tough, hot work.
