Heading south the first afternoon, I hoped to turn southeast out of Pueblo to explore John Martin State Park out on the plains. But it was a lot farther out of the way than seemed reasonable at that point. And stopping shorter at Lake Pueblo didn't appeal either. Bing! We drove south to Trinidad and enjoyed a (windy) night on the south shore of the lake state park instead, which opened up some explorations the next morning.
