What's not evident in this picture is that the temperature at the front -- where I had laid a thermometer on the table -- was over 80 degrees! It was sweltering inside, and here we were lighting candles...

We knew the church lacked AC, but had bad luck with a late June heat wave. I'd driven over early that morning (15 minutes from home) to close all the windows and blinds, and hang notes saying to keep them closed, to hold in some overnight cool -- which only helped a little bit.
