ROCK BOX INDEX FILE By Alan Silverstein Last updated: May 27, 2023 === PURPOSE OF INDEX === SEARCH ONLINE to see all possible locations for a given type of rock or other specimen in my (surprisingly huge) lifetime collection. DIRECTLY SEARCH this file in a browser, under the RBI link. (Gave up on Google Drive/Docs, broken 230105, repeatedly says I must upload to view it, but never succeeds. Deleted off PC + phone/Drive.) 050501 paper note said ~93 boxes (unnumbered) at my old house. 230401 now have ~222 numbered flats (in flux, sorting and high-grading). === ABBREVIATIONS USED === - 1UM = shelf 1, Upper, Middle: + first Vertical: Top, Upper, Middle, Lower + then Horizontal: Left, Middle, Right (across one shelf) + listed top-down in each stack (for whatever it's worth) + some shelves have no middles (one or both ways) or two middles SHELF NUMBERS: Only those are marked on the shelves themselves. - O = open box, no lid, just cardboard sheet covering - P = specifically, Behr open paint can box with handles - B = bigger box, taller than average - S = smaller box, shorter than average - D = Dell box, longer than average, with attached lid - X = odd shaped box - T = tumbled rocks - k = keepers (old "Tk", doesn't mean much now) - q = quarter full (not always noted though) - h = half full (not always noted though) - BOX NUMBERS: Three-digit identifiers at upper rights are arbitrary, sequential starting at 001; just to make unique ID easier when rearranging boxes. No numbers except on cardboard boxes with room to write them. Assigned starting 230209 in the shelf order at that time. - STATE NAMES: Abbreviate here, even if spelled out on the box. - DESCRIPTIONS: Some here are longer than what's written on the box! - SHELVES 1-4: low metal shelfs with display steps on top - SHELVES 5-6: tall homemade wooden shelves - SHELVES 7-8 + A-B: various shelves further west - MISC = miscellaneous - BIF = banded iron fm, mostly from along the North Platte River, WY; always includes "BIF" here, even if "banded" is missing. All BIF boxes should have extra cardboard reinforced bottoms! === GOAL === Nearly all rocks/etc in the basement are: a. in process in the tumbling shop, or b. loose on display, usually with a label glued on the bottom, or c. stored in a box labeled on one end. IDEALLY: - TWO-PART CLOSED BOXES preferred. But since tops and bottoms that mate are hard to get, and sometimes not tall enough, it's also okay to simply separate/cover open (pop/beer flat) boxes with a sheet of cardboard, or to use longer/thinner boxes with folding tops. - CONTENTS are briefly written on one end with black marker on white spray paint or on a box that is already white. Some exceptions for unique odd-shaped boxes. - ORGANIZE THEM better over long term: After all saved rocks are well labeled and indexed, then rearrange, high-grade and repack similar materials, reshelf more logically, and maintain this index. === INDEX === = SOUTH LEFT AISLE, LEFT SIDE = ------- 1UL 176 T BIF = banded iron fm, orange, mag+not, N Platte River, WY 1UL 120 OT BIF = banded iron fm, orange, WY 1UL 121 T BIF = banded iron fm, orange, WY 1UM 037 Oq odd rocks: shapes, patterns 1UM 224 T BIF = banded iron fm, purple incl slab bits + orange brecciated from 177-lb boulder, N Platte River, WY 1UM 177 T BIF = banded iron fm, purple, N Platte River, WY 1UR 119 BT BIF = banded iron fm, purple, mag/not, N Platte River, WY 1UR 186 Ph BIF = banded iron fm, large purple, N Platte R, WY ------- 1ML 103 T BIF = banded iron fm, reddish, mag+not, N Platte River, WY 1ML 102 T BIF = banded iron fm, color mix, magnetic, N Platte River, WY 1ML 201 BT BIF = banded iron fm, brecciated, mag+not, N Platte River, WY 1MM 110 B BIF = banded iron fm, various N Platte River, WY 1MM 122 .
