Over a hot summer weekend I led a field trip for the Fort Collins Rockhounds Club to Delaney Rim and Blue Forest, Wyoming. We camped out one night, Saturday and Sunday, at each location. Four cars and seven people met and left Fort Collins (north end) Saturday morning at 9:20. After snack stops in Laramie and Rawlins, we went south out of Wamsutter and were up on the Rim rockhounding by 2:30 pm, where two more club members (one car) met us. It was windy, but mostly clear and pleasantly cool.
After collecting a lot of turritella and stromatolite agate at various points along the rim road, and spending a night camped on Delaney Point, four cars and seven (different) people continued rockhounding west 3+ miles (many more stops). It was still windy, and somewhat hotter. After nearly 3 hours, at 11:00 am, we went the remaining 5 miles west and then 6 miles north to rejoin I80 at Tipton, where one person headed back to Fort Collins. The remaining three cars and six people continued west to lunch in Rock Springs, then through Green River and north to Blue Forest, arriving at about 3 pm.
Here we surface-hunted successfully, dug a little (finding a little petrified wood), and spent another pleasant night. The west wind that had blown strong for two days settled down, leaving a very warm day. By 12:30 the two remaining cars and four people were ready to go home. We made it to Farson for gas (barely) and food, then drove east for a long time. I pulled into my driveway at 7:45 pm after 772 miles on the round-trip.
